Thing #14 - Discovering Web 2.0 Tools

This is one of the most fun things I have done yet. I really enjoy getting to play with all of these tools and to try to figure out how to get them into the classrooms at Kimbrough. Here are a few of the things I played with...

Wordle is something that I have known about for a while. I even posted one in this blog earlier. It has been an ongoing ordeal to get the site to work at school, however. I have teachers who really want to use it, but it just doesn't work. Through multiple emails, work orders and phone calls, it has finally been decided that it will not work unless google is unblocked by our filtering system. Apparently "wordle.net utilizes google analytics for traffic monitoring. the hidden redirects to google are being blocked by iPrism and breaking site functionality.... only way to fix would be to unblock google from web filters or have teachers unblock google manually before trying to create a wordle project." So until that happens (hint, hint) we will not be able to use it. I decided to try something different this time and on the create page there is a place for you to put in the URL of any site with an RSS feed. I put in the URL for this blog and this is what came up. Pretty cool...

I spent some time working with Mnemograph and even went so far as to sign up for it. I was a history teacher for many years and timelines are always very important. I really liked the idea of the site and the examples were great. When I tried to make my own, however, I never could get it to look like I wanted it to. I would need to have more time to read the directions and play, but it could definitely be a valuable tool. Once again, though, you have to have an email address to sign up. That is a problem.

ToonDoo is another site I have played with in the last month or so. I even have my 6 year old daughter playing with it and creating her own comics. My 14 year old son liked it as well and thought it would be great to use in school. It also needs an email address, but if you read the comment on my earlier post it says that there are ways to get around that. I have not explored this further, but I will!
